Sid's Ups and Downs

Sid, the tail-less cat of The Ark, has always had a thing about getting high! Not in the hallucinogenic way, of course, but in the way of getting to the top of things. Ever since she was little, Sid has climbed up things! She loves height. She would always jump up on to the bushes in the garden and perch perilously on the topmost twig, or strut along the wooden handrail of the balcony (she has the bumps to prove that on more than one occasion she has fallen off!) and who doesn't remember the infamous “flying cat” episode?

She likes to find new things to climb up, to get a different view of life. One of her favourite places is perched high up on the roof of the house next door, right at the very top, surveying all of Pearly Beach, and only coming down when the local pigeons have teased her relentlessly.

Sid was well aware that the only way she could leave The Ark was via the back door, which was at “ground level”. As the front of The Ark was high up on the second floor, there was no other way down without jumping a long way – not a good idea because it hurts!

One day, when Sid was sunning herself on the front balcony, she noticed something interesting as she watched Mr Noah go into his den (aka the garage). Mr Noah opened the “up and over” wooden doors and went inside to work. As Sid lay there, she noticed that the door didn't stay up flat, but fell down a bit, hanging invitingly close to the ground. Sid sat and pondered this, as only cats can. She thought through an idea that was forming in her head. “Mmm,” she thought. “I wonder…”.

And so, a plan was hatched. The next day… “Just off to do some DIY in my den Mrs Noah”, called Mr Noah.

“Just off to get a bit of peace and quiet!” thought Mrs Noah.

Mr Noah opened the “den” door and pushed it back up, then stepped inside. Sid was already up on the balcony watching. Now was her chance…

She hopped up on to the garage roof and peered down over the side at the raised door. Tentatively, she stretched out and placed her paw onto it. It didn't move, so she placed another paw, followed quickly by her two hind paws, and sat proudly on the upturned garage door!

"Mmm, haven't had this view before!" she thought.

Oh! Something was happening. She started to move. Slowly. Downwards.

Sid clung on with her claws as she descended!

Mrs Noah let out a little scream as she spotted Sid sliding down the garage door, and disappearing off the end. Mr Noah, who had heard the door creaking as it started to move, and then a scraping noise across it, had gone to investigate and let out a very loud, “Ow!” as the garage door hit him squarely on the head!

Mr Noah staggered out, clutching his head, just in time to see the door drop to the ground and a very surprised Sid slide off, landing safely on the ground on all four feet.

Turning her tail-less bottom towards Mr Noah, she haughtily strutted away, her head held high and muttering to herself. ”Just what I thought would happen, obviously!”

“Oh, what a clever Sid,” said a laughing Mrs Noah. “I see you have your own personal elevator now!”
