Bundles of Fur with Legs

It was a hot, sticky day at the Ark, and Mango was lying on the stoep trying to keep cool when Sid strolled up from the garden with a present for Mango. Hearing Sid, she slowly opened one eye and watched as Sid dropped her head and let the mouse fall next to Mango’s mouth. “Here,” said Sid. “This is just for you,” and she stepped backwards sitting proudly watching Mango’s reaction.

Mango’s reaction probably wasn’t what Sid was hoping for, as 40kgs of German Shepherd leapt into the air, and backed off, staring at the shivering little bundle of fur. All three animals sat completely motionless, staring at one another. Sid looked quizzically at Mango wondering why she hadn’t pounced on to her little meal …

Mango looked curiously at the little ball with legs, then at Sid, puzzled as to what she was expected to do next …

The mouse was clearly considering its options over this “Mexican stand-off” …

Mango leaned forward slightly and sniffed at it. After all, that’s what dogs do – sniff things! The mouse remained as still as it could, hoping to call their bluff!

Sid meowed, “Pounce and devour, silly dog!” The mouse continued to stay as still as it could under the circumstances, obviously trying to decide what to do next, which was becoming increasingly difficult when a monster-size nose was trying to inhale her.

“What am I supposed to do with it?” Mango asked Sid.

“Eat it, of course. Like I do,” she replied. “You’ll like it. It tastes just like chicken.”

“You what? Eat me?” The little mouse squeaked. “You have to be joking!” And, with that she moved up on to her hind legs to make herself appear much bigger. As she did so, 40kgs of German Shepherd launched herself into the air from a lying down position, absolutely terrified! With a sideways glance at Sid, Mango shot into the Ark and on to her bed, hiding her eyes under her paws!

Sid was speechless! She sauntered across to Mango, as only cats can do, and began to explain the Rules of Engagement to her.

Meanwhile, the little bundle of fur with legs, scurried off into the bush with a disbelieving smile on her face!
